Why Do My Kids Need Fish Oil?

August 27, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

By: Dr. Eileen Psencik

What is a fish oil?
Fish oil is an essential fatty acid (EFA), essential meaning your body cannot make it, it must be provided for your body to work properly! Fish oils are gaining increasing notoriety for their high omega 3 content. There are many forms of omega oils, which differ in their structure as well as their biological function, but your body must have a good balance of omega oils 3 and 6 to have good health and prevent illness. An ideal balance is a 1 to 1 ratio of omega 6 to 3 fatty acids. Omega 6 fatty acids are high in corn, soy, safflower and sunflower sources to name a few. Omega 3 can be found in flax (LAN, a form that our body needs to convert to be able to use) and in cold water fish such as sardines, salmon, anchovy and cod (EPA/DHA, a form that is readily available for you to use!)

Why do my kids need fish oil? They are healthy!

Check your shopping cart; are you buying any packaged foods items? Have any whole grain bread in there? If you are even occasionally consuming packaged foods, there is a good chance your kids essential fatty acid ratios are imbalanced! Foods high in trans, hydrogenated, partially hydrogenated or fractioned fat or oil are high in omega 6, especially wheat products. Omega 3 can be found naturally in wild game and fish, unfortunately, we do not eat as much of these as our ancestors did, and our ancestors did not have the invention of a grain mill to eat products such as bread, tortillas and pastas. Hence, most of modern society has an IMBALANCE of these essential fatty acids that our ancestors did not face!

So what happens if your Omegas are imbalanced?

A high omega 6 to 3 ratio is linked to almost every chronic illness there is including heart disease, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, depression, Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, and allergies! When our EFA are imbalanced, this leads to excessive inflammation and decreased immune function. Recent research reveals that the average diet leaves us at a ratio of 20:1 in excess of omega 6!

What can I do to help them get more Omega 3 naturally?

Wild game and fish can be an excellent source of omega three, however, are largely unavailable and so riddled with pollutants that consuming them may do more harm than good. Plant sources such as flax seed and avocados can be great, but our body needs to convert them from a simpler form called LAN to a more available form EPA/DHA, and we are simply limited in our ability to do this. Hence, supplementation from a purified, toxin free fish oil like these is truly crucial for every citizen in our modern society.

Cancer Cells Slurp Up Fructose, U.S. Study Finds

August 8, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

* Study shows fructose is used differently than glucose.

* Findings challenge common wisdom about sugars.

WASHINGTON Aug 2 (Reuters) – Pancreatic tumor cells use fructose to divide and proliferate, U.S. researchers said on Monday in a study that challenges the common wisdom that all sugars are the same.

Tumor cells fed both glucose and fructose used the two sugars in two different ways, the team at the University of California Los Angeles found.

They said their finding, published in the journal Cancer Research, may help explain other studies that have linked fructose intake with pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest cancer types.

“These findings show that cancer cells can readily metabolize fructose to increase proliferation,” Dr. Anthony Heaney of UCLA’s Jonsson Cancer Center and colleagues wrote.

“They have major significance for cancer patients given dietary refined fructose consumption, and indicate that efforts to reduce refined fructose intake or inhibit fructose-mediated actions may disrupt cancer growth.”

Americans take in large amounts of fructose, mainly in high fructose corn syrup, a mix of fructose and glucose that is used in soft drinks, bread and a range of other foods.

Politicians, regulators, health experts and the industry have debated whether high fructose corn syrup and other ingredients have been helping make Americans fatter and less healthy.

Too much sugar of any kind not only adds pounds, but is also a key culprit in diabetes, heart disease and stroke, according to the American Heart Association.

Several states, including New York and California, have weighed a tax on sweetened soft drinks to defray the cost of treating obesity-related diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

The American Beverage Association, whose members include Coca-Cola (KO.N) and Kraft Foods (KFT.N) have strongly, and successfully, opposed efforts to tax soda. [ID:nN12233126]

The industry has also argued that sugar is sugar.

Heaney said his team found otherwise. They grew pancreatic cancer cells in lab dishes and fed them both glucose and fructose.

Tumor cells thrive on sugar but they used the fructose to proliferate. “Importantly, fructose and glucose metabolism are quite different,” Heaney’s team wrote.

“I think this paper has a lot of public health implications. Hopefully, at the federal level there will be some effort to step back on the amount of high fructose corn syrup in our diets,” Heaney said in a statement.

Now the team hopes to develop a drug that might stop tumor cells from making use of fructose.

U.S. consumption of high fructose corn syrup went up 1,000 percent between 1970 and 1990, researchers reported in 2004 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Doctor’s Note: Wouldn’t it be easier to stop consuming high fructose corn syrup rather than developing another drug?

Evidence Against the Flu Shot

August 4, 2010 by · 4 Comments

(NaturalNews) As ridiculous as it seems, retailers across the U.S. are already stocking their stores with Christmas goods. It’s all about the big commercial push, of course, since retailers make about 50 percent of their profits during the Christmas season.

Similarly, flu vaccine manufacturers generate huge profits during the Christmas season, too, and they’ve already begun shipping this year’s winter season flu vaccines to U.S. pharmacies and hospitals. Never mind the fact that the actual flu strain in the vaccine is little more than a hodgepodge collection of last year’s flu strains. Each year’s flu vaccines are technically only applicable to last year’s flu season, making them perfect for time travelers but useless for everybody else.

Along with the big vaccine push comes the inevitable vaccine propaganda. It’s all so predictable: First there’s the announcement that “everybody should get vaccinated.” This is followed by some later announcement in the pre-Christmas season of “how bad” this year’s flu season is getting. This is followed yet again by another urgent bulletin by health authorities urging everyone to get vaccinated.

The big vaccine push only quiets down when vaccine supplies dwindle. But as long as vaccines remain in inventory, the big vaccine push will stay aggressive, and during this annual charade, there won’t be a word mentioned about vitamin D and how it is far more effective than any vaccine at protecting people from seasonal flu.

Reading between the vaccine lines
This year’s vaccine push has begun with some curious admissions by the vaccine industry, reflected in a Reuters story (…). After the usual explanatory text about how flu vaccine manufacturers have started shipping their largest quantity of vaccines ever produced for flu season, the story prints this curious text:

“And U.S. officials said they were changing the labeling on a vaccine made by Australia’s CSL Ltd (CSL.AX) because it appears to have caused a higher than usual rate of seizures in children.”

Now hold on a second.

If you read between the lines here, this statement implies that: 1) Vaccines cause seizures in children. And then 2) This particular vaccines causes a higher rate of seizures in children than the usual rate of seizures in children.

Why is this curious? First off, because vaccine pushers have always sworn their vaccines caused no seizures whatsoever. No neurological problems. No spontaneous abortions in pregnant women. No increased rates of autism. Vaccines are all perfectly safe, they say, and no children are ever harmed by them.

That’s the mythology, at least, behind vaccines. But the reality is far different: Vaccines do cause seizures in children, and this year’s vaccines look like they’re going to cause a significantly higher rate of seizures than usual.

Note, by the way, that this was not the headline of the story. This admission was tucked away in the text of a Reuters story, without any real emphasis. If Reuters was really interested in reporting the truth about vaccines, the story headline would have been, “Flu vaccines cause seizures in children.”

Line up, sheeple!
The story goes on to say, “The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone be vaccinated against seasonal flu this year.”

Yep, everyone. That means one-month old infants. Pregnant women. Children with seizure disorders. Immune suppressed seniors. Everyone!

You see, in years past, vaccines were never recommended for everyone due to well-founded safety concerns. In some people, you see, the nearly-dead viral strains used in vaccines can actually cause the very flu they claim to prevent. So the CDC has, for as long as anyone can remember, always warned certain groups to be excluded from vaccines for their own safety.

Well not anymore. Any safety concerns have been thrown out the window in the quest to push more vaccines onto more people. Billions of dollars in pharmaceutical profits are at stake here, and health officials can’t afford to let a little safety get in the way.

This Reuters story continues:

“Most years, seasonal influenza infects between 5 percent and 20 percent of the U.S. population and kills 36,000 people. It puts about 200,000 into the hospital.”

Well, not really. The 36,000 figure often quoted from the CDC is wildly inaccurate (…). It’s a statistical guess based on such outdated data that to quote it as fact is laughable. Besides, it’s technically wrong to say that influenza kills anyone. The real killer here is vitamin D deficiency which causes a stalled out immune system. If people had sufficient levels of vitamin D circulating in their blood, the flu virus would be powerless to harm them. And since there are viruses everywhere in the world around us every single day, isn’t it more accurate to say that the “flu season” is actually the “vitamin D deficiency season?”

Think about it: Why does the flu circulate in the winter months in North America, but the summer months (June – August) in Australia? It’s because those are the times of weaker sunlight exposure resulting in widespread vitamin D deficiencies. The flu is always around, living amongst us, just waiting for weakened immune systems so it can strike. To say that “the flu” kills people in the winter is factually wrong. It’s the vitamin D deficiency that kills people by giving the flu an opportunity to attack a weakened immune system.

This is a simple factual point that the entire system of western medicine, with all its high-IQ doctors, has so far failed to realize. Sometimes it feels like we’re still living in the Dark Ages of medicine, I swear…

Where are the clinical trials?
Anyway, this Reuters story continues with one more whopper of a statement:

“The labeling for one vaccine, CSL Limited’s Afluria, has undergone changes this season to inform health care providers about an increased incidence of fever and febrile seizure… The FDA said it was asking CSL to conduct a study of its vaccine in children.”

Read between the lines on this one: This Afluria vaccine causes an increased risk of seizures, it’s being imported into the USA to be injected in children this flu season, and the FDA is just now asking for a study? That means, of course, that no study has been conducted on this vaccine yet.

In other words, this vaccine which causes seizures in children has never actually been properly tested in children according to FDA guidelines, so the FDA wants a test to be done but the vaccine will be injected into children in the USA anyway, even before the testing is likely to be completed.

And that means, of course, that U.S. children are being used as guinea pigs to see what happens to them following this vaccine injection. If enough children have seizures or end up paralyzed or dead, the FDA will probably pull the vaccine off the market. But that only happens after the fact and after the damage has already been done.

Don’t you get it? Your children are the experiment! The American People are the guinea pigs for every vaccine these companies come up with, and it doesn’t matter if the vaccine causes seizures, brain damage or even death… American children are going to be injected by the millions in order to find out what happens.

No need for influenza vaccines in anyone
This whole annual charade is utterly useless to begin with. There is simply no medically justifiable need to inject anyone with a flu vaccine — ever! What people need is vitamin D to activate their immune response so that natural exposures to seasonal flu are easily handled by their existing immune system functionality.

Let’s face it: The human immune system is far more intelligent and technologically advanced than any flu vaccine. It already has a pattern recognition system that can identify and destroy foreign invaders in the blood. But as research has shown, when vitamin D levels are deficient in the body, the immune system is effectively paralyzed and can’t respond. (…)

When vitamin D levels are high, the immune system responds rapidly to any influenza threat. That’s why I never get a flu shot and even so, I haven’t been sick for years. I do, however, get sunshine on a regular basis, and when I can’t get sunshine, I take a quality vitamin D3 supplement. And guess what? I don’t need a flu vaccine at all. I can walk into a room full of sick people infected with influenza and be completely and utterly immune to their coughing, sneezing, nose wiping and finger-licking handshaking.

Having vitamin D in your body is like wearing a bulletproof vest for influenza.

The medical industry won’t tell you this because there’s huge profit to be made in scaring people into paying for flu shots they don’t need. If people were told the truth about the dangers and the ineffectiveness of flu shots, very few would buy them. Because the truth is that, even in best-case scenarios, flu shots are maybe effective at preventing infections in one percent of those who take them.

And that means ninety-nine percent of those receiving flu shots are wasting their time and their money. Plus, they’re exposing themselves to chemicals that are obviously dangerous to the human body or else they wouldn’t cause seizures in children, get it?

And yet every flu season, people line up by the millions to get injected with something that might harm them, and they actually pay for being potentially harmed! Why do people do this? Because they foolishly trust in health authorities who almost universally have financial ties to the vaccine manufacturing companies and so are pushing a particular agenda in order to profit from vaccine sales.

But scientifically speaking, the flu season could be stopped in its tracks by handing out vitamin D3 supplements instead of vaccine injections. No needles. No seizures. And no drug company profits.

I don’t know about you, but I’d rather swallow a vitamin than get jabbed with a sharp needle. But that’s just me.

Most other people, it seems, would rather spend their winters wiping their noses raw with Kleenex, drowning themselves in over-the-counter flu medicines and missing a week or two of work while they try to fight off a flu infection they could have prevented with a few vitamin D supplements in the first place.

Believe me, it’s a lot more fun to laugh off the flu season and spend your winters healthy, well rested and completely immune to seasonal flu.

Vitamin D Deficiency in Infants

August 2, 2010 by · 1 Comment

NaturalNews August 2, 2010

Two studies published in the journal Pediatrics highlight that although vitamin D deficiency is widespread among infants in the United States, most pediatricians remain unaware of the problem.

The first study, conducted by researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), found that only 5 to 13 percent of breast-fed infants were receiving at least 400 IU of vitamin D per day, the amount currently recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Human breast milk is actually relatively low in vitamin D, probably because during our evolutionary history most babies got plenty of exposure to sunlight.

Although formula-fed infants were not included in the study, researchers noted that an infant would need to drink 32 ounces of fortified formula per day to get 400 IU of vitamin D, an amount that is probably unrealistic for young children.

The body produces vitamin D when exposed to UV-B radiation from sunlight. The nutrient is essential for the development and maintenance of bones and the immune system, and deficiency can increase the risk of soft or brittle bones, infection, cancer, heart disease and autoimmune disorders. Yet the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants get no direct sunlight at all for the first six months of life, and that they wear protective clothing and sunscreen beyond that age – effectively ruling out the healthiest, most reliable source of this essential nutrient.

Making matters worse, according to the CDC study, only 1 to 13 percent of children under the age of one take a vitamin D supplement.

A second study in the same issue found a lower (but still high) rate of vitamin D deficiency, with 58 percent of newborns and 36 percent of mothers testing deficient. A full 30 percent of mothers who took prenatal vitamins were still deficient in vitamin D.

Although increased sun exposure improved mothers’ vitamin D levels, it did not raise those of their infants. This further suggests that breast milk is a poor source of vitamin D and that infants need to be exposed to sunlight directly in order to synthesize the vitamin for themselves.

Chiropractic & Conception: Research lends hope for Infertility

July 1, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

A study authored by Dr. Madeline Behrendt, Chairwoman of the World Chiropractic Alliance Council on Woman’s Health, links chiropractic care and the ability of previously infertile woman to conceive a baby and carry it full term.

Behrendt’s work entitled Insult, Interference and Infertility: An Overview of Chiropractic Research was published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research. The study tracked 15 women, ages 22-65, who had a history of fertility problems; some for as long as nine years. Eight of the women had previously undergone unsuccessful fertility treatments.

These 15 woman entered chiropractic care. “Each was determined to close the gap between how her body was designed to function and the reality of how her body was functioning,” stated Dr. Behrendt.

The results were incredible. 14 of the 15 women became pregnant following the start of chiropractic adjustments. The 65-year old woman had ceased having a menstrual cycle at age 18 following a traumatic fall. Then, nearly five decades later and little more than a month after starting chiropractic care, her cycles resumed. Although she did not get pregnant, she was advised to use precautions.

Some of the case studies are remarkable. A 32 year-old woman described in the study had no menstrual cycle for 12 years. She had attempted multiple fertility treatments with no success. After two months of chiropractic care with attention to the lumbar regions menstruation started. And, after four cycles, unassisted pregnancy occurred. Chiropractic is not a specific cure for infertility, but the concept that interference within your nervous system can disrupt normal body functions is an undisputed, scientific fact.

Also detailed was the plight of a 26 year-old woman who suffered from severe scoliosis with a Cobb’s angle of 58 degrees. She too was infertile despite numerous medical treatments to assist conception. After six months of chiropractic care with adjustments applied to the sacrum, lumbar and cervical regions the Cobb’s angle decreased to 47 degrees. One month later, unassisted pregnancy occurred.

The study offers hope to infertile women and an alternative to fertility drugs. There are 40,000 births in the U.S. each year that are achieved using assisted reproductive technologies. There are yet to be studies as to the long-term effects of these drugs nor has there been a uniform tracking of birth defects among children conceived using these methods.

Dr. Behrendt’s research is wonderful news for couples trying to start a family. It also serves as further evidence that regular spinal adjustments can have benefits far beyond those that the public normally associates with chiropractic care.

How To Calculate Your Maximum Heart Rate

July 1, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

By: Dr. Eileen Psencik

Working out with a heart rate monitor is wonderful, but only if you know what you are doing! It can help you improve performance, increase endurance, enhance your cardiovascular system and make your workouts a healing experience! To begin, you must calculate your maximum heart rate. Then you can determine when you are working out aerobically, when you are able to use oxygen efficiently, and when you go above this zone and begin to create lactic acid and work in your anaerobic zone.

There are two ways to calculate your maximum heart rate:
1. 220 – your age = Max Heart Rate is the old standard equation that does not account for your your current health status.

2. Calculating your Max HR including health factors (from Dr. Phil Maffetone) allows for a specific value relative to your current health status
• 180 – your age = Max HR
• – 10 if recovering from an illness
• – 5 if just beginning an exercise program, recent injury/training/competition, frequent allergies, cold, flu, etc.
• +5 if you have been exercising for 2 years without injury

Zone 1: 60%-65% % of your Max Heart rate for Aerobic recovery
Zone 2: 65%-70% of your Max Heart Rate for Endurance Base
Zone 3: 70%-80% of your Max Heart Rate for Aerobic capacity
Zone 4: 80%-85% of your Max Heart Rate for Lactate threshold
Zone 5: 86% + of your Max Heart Rate for Maximum Aerobic training

To burn fat and lose inches, stay in zones 2 and 3. These are also the zones where your body is able to heal more efficiently; going above them puts increased stress on your body.

In zones 4 and 5 your adrenal glands produce more Cortisol, your stress hormone. If your adrenal glands are already fatigued and unable to produce enough Cortisol from chronic stress, trying to get into zones 4 and 5 can be harmful to your system, and if your Cortisol before working out is too high, it can have the same deleterious effect.

As your body heals, you will be able to work out harder at a lower heart rate! You will find you have more energy and endurance when you learn how to work out smarter, not harder!

The Erchonia DermaLASER™ is the FIRST and ONLY Low Level Laser to be given FDA market clearance for the treatment of acne. The ErchoniaDerma LASER™ is a low-level, or cold laser, that works by killing the bacteria P. Acnes that is the cause of acne. Unlike current acne laser treatments, the Erchonia DermaLASER™ is not hot so it does not irritate or adversely affect the healthy skin cells. The Erchonia DermaLASER™ targets only the acne-causing bacteria itself, not the skin, so it effectively treats the cause of acne. Until now, people with acne have had to rely on strong antibiotic treatments lasting several months, harsh topical ointments that can irritate and severely dry out the skin or hot lasers that cause redness and pain. 30 years of research shows that side effects from low-level laser treatments of all kinds are minimal to non-existent and the DermaLASER™ is no exception. “This FDA market clearance is a major step forward in the fight against acne and the misery it causes teens and adults alike,” comments Charlie Shanks, VP of Sales and Marketing for Erchonia Medical. “For the first time it is possible to painlessly and quickly treat the root causes of acne, instead of the usual symptomatic treatments of messy ointments and creams.”

Bridging the Gap: between Chiropractic & Medicine Vol. 1 Num. 3: Fatigue

June 22, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Fatigue makes people unnecessarily uncomfortable, unhappy and unproductive. It is one of the most common complaints we hear, yet it should not be accepted as normal, at any age.
Fatigue takes many forms: mental, physical and chemical. People who can’t seem to get their brains and their bodies in gear usually have both physical and chemical imbalances. Fortunately, most of these are correctable.
Common causes of fatigue:
1. Dehydration is one of the most common causes of fatigue. Drinking more water is the simple solution to this problem. Most people need to drink a minimum of five or six 8 oz. glasses of water between meals, not with meals. Other liquids such as juice, coffee or tea may NOT be substituted for water as all other liquids are processed differently.
2. Oxygen/carbon dioxide regulation is another common reason for fatigue. Although this takes place in the lungs, there are many areas of the body which have a greater influence on oxygen and carbon dioxide and thus upon the energy level of the body. The diaphragm or breathing muscle is one of the more important areas of oxygen and carbon dioxide regulation, as it is the reason air is brought in and pushed out of the lungs.
3. Low hemoglobin (anemia) or a low red blood cell count may be another reason for improper oxygen usage. This is only sometimes caused by low iron. Others include: poor digestion, lack of vitamin B-1 and liver problems.
4. Adrenal insufficiency is another common reason for fatigue. The adrenal glands are our reserve energy supply and have a major influence upon blood sugar. Other hormonal influences include the thyroid and other glands, and metabolism in general, all of which are responsible for energy.
5. Poor circulation of blood and lymph (the waste removal system) is sometimes related to fatigue. When the circulatory system isn’t working properly, oxygen and nutrients cannot reach all the cells of the body and waste products cannot be removed. One of the best ways to improve circulation is to exercise.
6. Nutritional imbalances can also cause fatigue. This can be something as simple as a vitamin B-12 deficiency or too much protein, or it can be something more complex, such as an accumulation of various vitamin or mineral deficiencies over a period of time.

In conclusion, fatigue may be the result of any one or a combination of these causes. The key is to find any problems and correct them. AK helps us to get accurate information as to the underlying cause. We also appreciate the need for diagnostics and medicine, but caution when it is best to use them. A combination of both may be needed.
